SMITHFIELD – Two bridges in Johnston County will undergo preservation work thanks to a $1.9 million contract awarded last week by the state Transportation Department.

American Civil Constructors West Coast LLC will perform the maintenance work on these two structures: The bridges will receive an epoxy-resin sealant that will prolong the life of the driving decks. The process requires the removal of a thin layer of concrete, which is replaced with the overlay material. Any places on the deck that have cracked or chipped away will be repaired, too. Grooves will be added to the deck to reduce the pooling of stormwater and improve safety. Some maintenance to the substructures, which are below the deck, also will be performed.

Although a start date has yet to be established, the contractor will have until next year to complete the maintenance, requiring occasional overnight lane closures. Drivers should be alert and slow down when crossing these bridges while this work is performed.
